Signature pear brand of China’s Xinjiang reaps from growing market

Abstract : Korla pears, the most popular variety of pears in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is seeing increasing sales thanks to expanding market promotions.

URUMQI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Korla pears, the most popular variety of pears in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is seeing increasing sales thanks to expanding market promotions.

The specialty fruit, known for its fragrance and juicy flesh, is mostly grown in the city of Korla. Currently, it is the harvest season for Korla pears.

Over 500,000 tonnes of Korla pears would be reaped from 455,000 mu (about 30,333 hectares) of pear trees this year.

The local government has launched a string of promotional activities in east, central and southwest China, with a 93,000-tonne pear order made in the city of Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province, last week.

The Korla pear made into the list of geographical indications products commonly recognized and protected in China and the European Union, heralding expanding market in the latter region.

Exports of the fruit stand between 20,000 tonnes and 30,000 tonnes each year, covering 34 countries and regions. Enditem
